(half-time) Music Director Job Description

The Music Director at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Easton supervises the music program and the volunteer music staff in collaboration with the minister of the fellowship. The Music Director shall report to the chair of the Music Committee. Particular responsibilities include:

Worship
  • Support and collaborate with ministers or other service leaders in the creation of worship services.
  • Assist in choosing anthems and hymns in consultation with the ministers/service leaders.
  • Arrange for musicians or accompanists at alternate (non-choir) worship services. Communicate with them about worship service plans, and assist with selection of hymns.
  • Design and implement special musical worship services at least once per year.
  • Support and develop the experience of congregational singing.

Adult Music
  • Encourage and promote the adult choir.
  • Rehearse with the adult choir once a week, September-June and lead and accompany choir a minimum of two Sundays per month.
  • Provide music for some special services throughout the year.
  • Create and support other musical groups within the fellowship to expand the musical experiences available to adult musicians.

Children’s and Youth Music
  • Encourage and support the music-related participation of children and youth in religious education and worship services as well as special events in collaboration with the coordinator of religious education.

Summer Music
  • Hire and schedule soloists/accompanists for summer worship services.

General
  • Work with the music committee to plan programs and activities that will enrich congregational life and reach out into the community with music. Examples of community outreach are choir swaps and participation in community choral events.
  • In collaboration with the music committee, contribute to the music portion of the fellowship’s long-range plan.
  • Maintain contact with music colleagues in other churches and with the wider denomination through involvement in the Unitarian Universalist Musicians Network, American Choral Directors Association, and/or other professional and denominational organizations.
